We’re launching our Maker Monday series with a feature on one of our most supportive artists, Sam from Calm Waters Pottery. Sam joined us for a pop-up shortly after we opened The Artist’s Market and connected with us immediately. Her pottery is one of a kind and each piece is made with intention and care.
Sam started pottery as a form of meditation and fell in love with it. She’s working on her MFA in ceramics at Hood College and creating wall-hanging sculptures inspired by nature for an upcoming show. Sam’s favorite thing to make is ocean-inspired mugs.
Calm Waters was named after her biggest inspiration - the earth. Sam’s pottery is mostly nature-inspired, peaceful works of functional art. This summer, Sam went to Tuscany for a ceramics workshop where she learned all about making and using colored porcelain, among other things.
Outside of pottery, Sam is an elementary school art teacher and one of our most valuable team members at Frederick MADE. Our favorite Calm Water products are mugs! Sam makes every piece one-of-a-kind, and Christy may have a mug for every day of the week.
